Bring Out the Old, Go Get the New
Updated: Jan 20, 2019
Fashion has always been a huge part of my life. So when I decided to do my first blog about it, I immediately knew it would be about my style and how I come up with my own looks. Since I was young, I have been combing the discount and thrift stores for one-of-a-kind pieces that I can mix and match with new, trendy pieces I can grab at Target, or in my case growing up in West Virginia, Kmart. I have such a fondness for rummaging through a Goodwill or a posh vintage store in a trendy urban neighborhood. The nostalgia is everywhere you turn and each piece has a story behind it. And then you have your Target. The Mecca for all of us ladies out there. Is it what the Pearly Gates may look like? Probably. We grab our big red cart and march straight to the Starbucks line for our skinny vanilla lattes and pretend for a moment the 18,000 things in our planners left to be done that day don't exist. And for those of us that don't have the luxury of that cosmic experience, we shove an iPad and some fruit snacks in our toddlers faces in hopes that it might buy us at least 15 minutes of Target euphoria.
You can immediately walk into any said Target and find at least 20 fun trendy items to pair with what you have at home. For me, it's usually an accessory. But on my last run, I found a top that I'm just obsessed with and prolly will be for a long time. The peasant sleeves and wooden button detail just said "Hi Ali, that pink beret in your coat closet that you dream about wearing and haven't since your last trip to Paris would look perfectly romantic with me." It was right (TARGET TOP). I paired it with my vintage store beret that I've had since my early twenties, a vintage belt from Boris and Natasha in Charlotte, NC and my absolute favorite Current/ Elliott jeans. Boots are Coach, last season. Here's a pair that are very similar that are currently on SALE! INC BOOTS
I found this houndstooth mini skirt at a junk store in Charlotte, NC (I used to live there) and it is an absolute homage to everything that was ridiculously good about early 60s style. I paired it with a basic cream crewneck sweater (here is a similar style - JCREW FACTORY), and my dark brown COACH boots (similar boot - INC BOOT). The "new" trendy piece is the brown "band hat" as I like to call it, from Target. I feel like I'm a majorette in the 60s with this outfit and there ain't a damn thing wrong with that. I secretly always wanted to be a majorette.
One of the things I have collected since my childhood has been my parents' old clothes. I have a stack of my dad's old t-shirts and sweaters that are my absolute favorite things in the whole world. I just found these v-neck embroidered numbers of his, and I couldn't be more excited about it. Theres a good chance he doesn't know I have them so it'll be fun to pick him at the airport in March with one of them on. #creeper I paired this one with my favorite roll-up JOE'S high water jeans (here are 2 pair at Nordstrom Rack that are similar and affordable - JOE'S & AG jeans), FRANCO SARTO open-front booties (similar style - VINCE CAMUTO), and for the new trendy piece - my personalized gold ETSY necklace complete with my kiddos' initials, because I #momsohard. Glasses are no longer available but these are SUPER similar WARBY PARKER.
I'd say the next look is probably the one you'll see me in most. None of the pieces are vintage, but only 2 of them are this season. That's what I love about this post - I LOVE buying something new and on-trend, walking into my closet and grabbing an old top I never thought I'd wear again to pair it with! I can't say enough good things about these leggings - I mean they're made by SPANX so do I really need to say more? They are a little pricey, and I luckily got them during the Semi-Annual Sale at Nordstrom, but they are probably the most versatile item in my closet right now and totally worth the splurge. You can dress them up, down and anyway you like 'em. (LEGGINGS) Here they are dressed down for a Sunday Funday, paired with an older Banana Republic flowy white top (this would be an ADORABLE substitute at a great price - OLD NAVY), an army green vest from Target I got many moons ago (look at this one from WALMART - SO CUTE AND AFFORDABLE!!!), STEVE MADDEN slip-ons and SUGARFIX by BAUBLEBAR earrings from Target.
My last look includes the shoes I wear 98% of my life, so I couldn't leave them out. They're the CONVERSE All-Star Shoreline shoe and they have a special place in my cold, dead heart. They go with everything and are insanely comfy. I paired them here with a pair of WILLIAM RAST jeans, which are on clearance right now and you will NOT be sorry - they suck it all in, and a double chevron knit sweater from NORDSTROM RACK. Complete with GORJANA gold hoops, which are pricier but are great quality and timeless, and a messy top-bun that's masking my insanely bitchy attitude due to being awoken by my toddler at 4:30 AM. Seriously though, invest in a few classic jewelry pieces like these hoops or pretty gold geometric studs. They literally go with everything!
Moral of the story? You don't have to go out and buy all the latest trends and spend a ton of money. One little trendy accessory matched with a vintage piece can take your look to the level you want. It's hard to find the time to shop as a mom so use your time wisely and efficiently when you DO have the time - make a list of the items you've had your eye on - have a game plan so you'll be on TOP of your game, and go get them!! YOU DESERVE IT:)
