Contouring for the Non-Millennial
Updated: Jan 30, 2019
I remember the simplistic days of lip liner, compacts, clear mascara and Dr. Pepper lip smackers like it was yesterday. That was my 16 year-old beauty regimen and goddamn if I don't miss the lack of product OR wrinkles. But here we are - older, and in the age of the Millenial and contouring. At first, I didn't give the contouring thing a second thought. My practical side immediately said "that is insane and time consuming and weird." But, because I'm on this new journey of making my life, as well as helping to make others' lives easier and prettier, I thought, "Why not? Let's give it a shot." And I'm so glad I did because I really love it.
This routine is a little step up from the last one I did for y'all. It's a little heavier on the eyes and I did a really minimal contour as well. You don't have to run out and buy every single product I list - try to work with what you have and pick up what you can afford. My makeup drawer is definitely a mixture of higher-end and drugstore finds. You can find PLENTY of quality, awesome products in drugstores these days! Check out my stories this morning on Instagram to watch the complete video tutorial:) And if you miss it today, I'll have it highlighted under BEAUTY on my Insta Highlights for reference!
Start with a small pea size amount of some decent primer - I LOVE this HONEST BEAUTY Everything Primer. It seems to fill in fine lines and gives a really nice subtle glow under the makeup. If you order from the link above, they're offering a $2.75 off coupon from Amazon!
I use a Beauty Blender to do my foundation, but you can use a brush or even your fingers! I've done all 3. This one is the ULTA Super Blender (comes in a 2 pack). Right now I'm using a combo of BEAUTYCOUNTER Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage in Shade No 2. and L'OREAL Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation in Shade No 104 (this foundation is SO GOOD for $13!! Stays on for HOURS!) I mix them because I'm not a huge fan of the super dewy look and the Pro-Matte balances the moisture you get form the Dew Skin. Just a small pea-size amount of each - I just dot it on my forehead, cheeks and chin. Then blend away by dabbing!
This is BY FAR my fave new product - TARTE Shape Tape in Light. It comes in a plethora of colors and it doubles as a concealer and contouring product! It's coverage is outstanding and it lasts alllllll day. I'm seriously impressed over here! Worth the splurge. I use my fingers to blend, and I do a little bit on the bridge of my nose and nose creases as well. To contour, I blend down to to my cheekbones.
This is my powder, which is compact. I am obsessed with this stuff and have used it forever. You can honestly use it as a finishing powder or just on its own for a really subtle makeup look. It's coverage is so good and you can definitely build on it. I do a shade darker than my skin to give myself just a hint of color since I look dead in the winter. It's the MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Golden and I use a big fluffy powder brush by SONIA KASHUK (sorry, forgot a photo).
Now it's time to contour. So when I decided I was gonna start doing this once in a while, I knew I needed something SIMPLE to work with. That's when I found the NYX WONDER STICK! It's fantastic - it has both ends - dark and light - and you literally just use it as a crayon on your face. 1 swipe along each side of the top of your forehead, 1 swipe along each side of the nose, 1 swipe under each hollow of the cheekbone and 1 swipe under each jaw line. This is the most MINIMAL contouring - some people get serious about it but I have to keep it basic here. Blend with any kind of blending brush - mine is an ELF foundation brush but works just fine!
Find yourself a great highlighting/contouring palette that you can use for different times of the year and for day/night. I love the one that I have and right now it's 50% OFF, with an additional 20% for your first order!!! It's BECCA COSMETICS Apres Ski Glow Face Palette and it's SO versatile! I use the white WET 'N' WILD contouring brush (which is LITERALLY $.99) for everywhere that I swiped the dark end of the WONDERSTICK - just a gentle brush along. And then I just use my small, flatter blush brush (MAC) and swipe one of the highlighter shades along the tops of my cheekbones. Then, with my finger, I rub it along the bridge of my nose and the "heart" of my top lip. Again, you can do much more, but I choose not to "highlight" my wrinkles. Nobody wants to see that.
Time for the EYES! I just got this ULTA Rose Gold palette and I LOVE IT. Lots of neutral options as well as a few shimmers. I started with the Prosecco color all over lid and brow bone. with a short, flat paddle brush. Mine is old but here is a great option - IT Small Shadow Brush
Go into the crease with a darker shade (I LOVE my MAC Blending Brush) - here I used the "Dessert' shade in the palette. Form a small "V" on the outer corner of the eye and blend into the lid slightly. Once that's done and blended, apply a lighter shimmery shade over the whole lid with a versatile shadow brush (love this MAC brush - guess they stopped making mine) - I used "Chandelier, which is a bronzy shimmer. Dab a bit with your pinky into corners of the eye as well.
I finished my eyes with a soft pink shimmer called - you guessed it - "Pink" - from the same palette, with the same MAC Shadow brush. I also dabbed a bit of this in the corners and then along the brow bone for some highlights. I love COVER GIRL Lash Blast Volume Mascara in Black and it's less than $6. Can't beat it. I do 2 coats of that!! I finish with a little swipe of one of my fave blushes by MAC in Blush Baby, which is a beigy pink. It's a great color for any skin tone!
This is my new fave lippie (BARE MINERALS), which I've mentioned more than once on my Instagram Stories (under BEAUTY highlights). It's a matte pink that stays on FOREVER!! If you order from Nordstrom it's free shipping!
And VOILA! Not too shabby for an almost 40-year-old mama of two who's dog-ass tired most of the time. Like I said, you don't have to splurge for the more expensive products. The ULTA beauty products are great! I also LOVE L'OREAL , REVLON (their matte lip options are GREAT) and NYX - you can recreate this look for much less by trying drugstore options! Go explore the stores - and have fun with it at the of the day!! Go watch my Insta Stories for the full tutorial:)
